Pre-orders are now being accepted for OpenBSD 4.5, scheduled for release on May 1st, 2009.
The developers bring us an amazing amount of cool new stuff (Accelerated video drivers, OpenSSH 5.2, LDoms Virtualization, pflow(4) NetFlow export interface, aucat(1) audio server capability and lots more). There are over 5500 ports and packages for easy installation.
Of course, t-shirts and posters are available too. Order your set NOW! (International, Europe)

Got mine and a T-Shirt already even before this page come up.
With all the talks on misc@ for prize on order and all. Instead, let see how quickly it can reach the first 1,000 order.
And what's the new puffy subject this time.
First guess was a Disco Puffy may be to reflect all the changes in the Audio system of OpenBSD, but I sure could be wrong.
Better idea?
Long live Puffy!

Yes your right. I do need to get out more. But 'Nekulturny', that's pushing it a bit. (;>
Tron came out n 1982.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tron_(film)
I couldn't even by a beer then. Believe it or not. I had at time to collect empty bottle on the side of the street to by peanut butter and bread when I was in college then to get a decent meal. Yes, that was decent for me back then.
I put myself to College by working at McDonald's and the best I could get was the stupid cartoon about movies back then at best. (;>
But when I could go to watch the tight polyester dress and get one beer that lasted me all night, I did enjoy it. Yeap, been there, done that.
But great art work and yes, you are right, now I can see it's Tron alright!
May be I go rent the movie next. (;>

Actually, you would assume wrong. The orders are encrypted when taken
with public keys for the sites that process the orders. unless I intercept the order from the web form while it is being taken, I can't do anything with it. and once it it taken and encrypted I can't do anything with it (short of ending up with a corrupted order)
The system is actually deliberately designed so that no data about
you or your orders is kept on it after the fact. Impossible not
to have it there while the order is being taken, but afterwards I pretty much can't screw with it (Unless I could break RSA, which if I could I kinda think I'd have better things to do with my time than mess with OpenBSD orders ;)
It's amusing, because it's the kind of paranoia that you really think
should be "duh!" when designing such things, but then you see how it gets done out there and you realize common sense would be a rare thing indeed.

Our best bet would be to wait for the nouveau drivers to be released. And then, wait a bit more so they can be ported to OpenBSD.
Until that happens, the usual recommendation is to avoid Nvidia like the plague :)

Even after that happens, avoid NVIDIA like the plague. The way I see it, nouveau is for people unfortunate enough to have hardware and cannot afford decent cards from AMD or even Intel.

> Until that happens, the usual recommendation is to avoid Nvidia like the plague :)
One other thing you can do is send email to xorg.
Like, the nv(4) manpage doesn't even mention this driver is a travesty, since there is "proprietary" clock information, and thus it sucks camels through straws.
I don't really understand why xorg kow-tows to those companies. The nv driver is a "free" piece of shit, designed by a guy that works at nvidia. Most everyone knows the score: it doesn't work. If you want an nvidia card that runs, you have to run a closed driver in an OS that sold its soul (linux and freebsd come to mind).
so, hey, just hike over to the xorg mailing-lists and tell them they're a bunch of lame asses for this situation.
By Anonymous Coward (85.19.213.88) on
As always, the easiest solution is to buy supported hardware. I'm
throwing out my Nvidia 7600GT for a new ATI card ("just" €75 for a
reasonably good one).
By Owain G. Ainsworth (oga) oga@openbsd.org on
Nope, 'fraid not.
NVidia are still arseholes, so little's changed. When nouveau stabilises some more and does memory management properly, I'll try again to port it.
Either way, why give money to a company who don't deserve it? Buy from someone else.

Basically yes, since 4.4, but it depends on the adapter, take a look at the changelog or release-date manpage.

T-shirt looks really nice, but why is the picture almost always in the front like most cheap shirts? This one has a really great design and may even be the best one so far for me, but it would look much nicer with the picture in the back.
I think I already said that but those T-shirts would look much more high quality with a small OpenBSD logo on the top front and the large picture on the back.

Great idea. My 3.5/CARP and OpenSSH shirts have the main graphic on the back with a tasteful logo on the front and are all the better for it.
Wim, I'm guessing a front or back option at order time would create big time work for you? Maybe future releases can alternate front/back printing, or maybe I'm obsessing too much here ;-)

AFAIK the t-shirts aren't made on demand. Wim and Austin had to keep either twice as many t-shirts (or let only half the number of t-shirts printed per size and front/back option, which probably would increase the costs).

> Wim, I'm guessing a front or back option at order time would create big time work for you? Maybe future releases can alternate front/back printing, or maybe I'm obsessing too much here ;-)
We have printed front and back options in the past, for example the 4.2 "Because Security Matters" is available with nothing on the front, print on the back or the reverse. (check the webform for Europe)
Peoples preference seems to be about 50/50 so I guess tastes differ.
It's not worth the overhead in stock though, you have to keep a lot more shelve space for it.
On the other hand we have printed *always* variations of the shirts at request, for example we always print a handful with a back print only, no front print, like the 4.4 Shirt is available in L and XL with only the back print. The Chix dig Tshirt is also available with only the small front print, no back print. If you are interested, talk to me, I'm easy to bribe with a bottle of red wine :-)
I like having a back print only, but then the back print should not be too massive as it makes you sweat on the back.

Maybe you could explain me the difference in shelve space? If people preferences are 50/50, and you print let's say 10K Tshirts, what's the difference in shelve space if you print 5K front and 5K back or 10K front only? I think it does not matter much (but I may be wrong) and people could decide.
Well, I think I will bribe you with a bottle of wine ;)

For example, let's have a look at the 4.2 stats for M, L, XL and XXL:
% Back % Front
T28 size M 6,6 13,9
T28 size L 10,8 7,8
T28 size XL 9,0 24,7
T28 size XXL 11,4 8,4
It's hard to estimate what sizes (M, L, XL) will sell in the first place so if you add the extra margin you need to compensate for the Front / Back balance, you end up printing not 10k Tshirt but 7k front and 7k back, thus 14k
And then you need to get rid of the leftovers...

I agree with him, I do like the Shirts with the nice OpenBSD logo on the front more than those with a huge motive on the front and nothing on the back. And they are a little bit more office friendly, I think. Anywho, I didn't hesitate a single second with the order as soon as I saw the theme. A complete set (CDs, shirt, poster, donation) is now waiting to chown(8).
Anyone else who'd be interested in something like a software subscription option? I thought of something like prepay the next 2,4 or 6 releases, so you don't have to even think about pre ordering? Maybe this would pay off for the project too, as they'd gain a tiny little bit of financial planning reliability. Though I am not sure how much work that would be for e.g. Wim to establish such an option...

You are stirring a hornets' nest. It doesn't matter if somebody is interested or not, TPTB do not like it. Invitations of interest published widely are not likely to change that.
You could STFA for this site or misc@ to see all the "wishers" and "improvers" grinding their own axes. None of the promoters was ever going to do all the work to imlplement such a scheme ..... Are you volunteering?

Enough with this nonsense. I offered this thing back in 2004 because everyone claimed to be in favor of funneling vast amounts of corporate riches to the OpenBSD project, but had no method to do so. Guess how many of these bundles were ordered in the last five years? TWO! From the same company, no less.

Then make your own. It's cheaper than buying from Wim and you get
to have it your way, no questions asked. OpenBSD does not profit
from T-shirt sales anyway, so rather than taking their time customizing
T-shits, make your own and donate or buy a CD-set or three.

Huh? They get a bunch of T-Shirts made at each release and sell them at cost? I have to think the project makes something off of them, or else why would they burn the cash to have them made in the first place?

Your logic is flawed. "Not profitable" is different from "losing cash".
Those T-shirts are made because they are cool, and the project often has stuff to say, and the T-shirts are a nice vehicle for that.
As far as I know, T-shirt making is a "break even" operation. There's no actual money to be made from it at the price it's sold (or very little). Compare that to actual donations (of sizeable amounts, 1 EUR donations are ridiculous and will incur HUGE processing costs, like 80%), where most of the money ends up being used to development.
Take one T-shirt a 15 EUR. Between making, storage, and sale, assume the project makes only 2 EUR off this T-shirt (I don't have the actual number, it might be even lower). You would have to buy over 10 T-shirts to match a 30 EUR donation (even counting the processing costs of the donation).
I don't want to keep you from buying T-shirts. The project creates them for a reason, and you can go on enjoying them.
You just need to realize that T-shirts' sales do not fund the project, for the most part. They're just cool goodies.

It would be best if you could post a photo of yours and the ordered t-shirt size ;)

I ordered mine L but I'm ordering M next time. L is fine but I
prefer the slightly tighter fit (not gay tight but tighter ;-)).
I'm 185cm and something like 85kg, relatively slim build.

Would you say S is OK for 1.70 m and 65Kg?. I neither like the 'Love Parade' fit. :-)

I could not say. Unless you're also 1.70m over the shoulders, M
or S should be fine ;-) I think I'd go for M, since too small is
worse than too big IMO. You just have to try. I usually use
between M and L, depending on the make.
