Uwe brings sdmmc(4) on zaurus

Contributed by deanna on from the only in current dept.

Jeff Quast writes:

uwe@ has expanded his new sdmmc(4) driver to support the built-in sd slot of the zaurus! This allows zaurus users to have extra storage while keeping the CF slot available for other uses (such as wi(4)).

Uwe's original message, with the usual caveats:
I'm sure somebody has been waiting for this:

pxammc0 at pxaip0: MMC/SD/SDIO controller
sdmmc0 at pxammc0
...
scsibus0 at sdmmc0: 2 targets
sd0 at scsibus0 targ 1 lun 0: <SD/MMC, Drive #01, > SCSI2 0/direct fixed
sd0: 14MB, 14 cyl, 64 head, 32 sec, 512 bytes/sec, 29120 sec total

This is now in -current, although not well tested, so it comes with the
usual disclaimer, yadda yadda. Don't get excited and be warned!

But have fun... :)

Am I the only one who didn't know there was an arm list? :-)

FWIW, it should show up as gmane.os.openbsd.arm some time in the next few days.

There you have it, in all its glory. The catch all document for OpenBSD-related mailinglists.

I gotta say, I've seen some other people use linux distributions on their zaurus, and i've looked at the work freebsd and netbsd are now doing to support it as a platform, but OpenBSD tops them all in supporting all of the bells and whistles. Especially by providing binary packages each release.

I love my zaurus to death. Nothing like it, bsd in your pocket :)

I personally surprised BSD hasn't thrived in the mobile or pocket sized computer industry.. great licence, nice and clean codebase.. and the feel of BSD in ones pocket ;)

The power consumption of devices it's been ported to so far is pretty heavy though. The Zaurus is great, but if the battery lasted a day with some kind of network connection it would be significantly more useful.

The Nokia 9300i (OMAP chip, Psion-or-whatever-it's-called-now OS) is definitely worth a look for mobile ssh/httv.

most of the content of both is junk... the nokia does display this important educational content way better than gnash does though.

Or the Nokia 770/800. Great for ssh/http

...it would be unfair, however, not to point out the truly abysmal cursor-moving-device here - I hesitate to use the term 'joystick' - but once you've read the docs it can revert to being the space-saving pgup/pgdown/home/end key that it really is.

Bit of a different kettle of fish really. Haven't used one, but I think I'd prefer the Z there.

Yes, the Z is nice, but I think they are no longer being made.

It seems that Sharp is still producing our favorite pocket computers. Here's the latest news:

                [quote]Hi all,

As we all "know", Sharp pulled the plug with the "last" production
                run for February...

Now the fun part begins: We tried to order some more (because
with the "end of the line" sales increased big time). The answer
was "OK". Box came. Produced March 2007 (!)

                *speechless*
Talked with the Sharp sales droid, WT* is going on ??
Sales droid : "How many do you need for April and forecast for
                May ?"

No, we have no idea what the hell is going on at Sharp.
We got no explanation and (even if we got some info how long
they plan to continue) we won't comment this further.
For now, we expect everything. From out-of-stock tomorrow up
to a new model announcement next week.
Or maybe the rumor was just strategic to get rid of stock for the
new SL-C4000XL with 3D holographic XGA, toaster interface,
                GSM, WiFi and bottle opener...

We don't know what kind of game they're playing, but for today
we can only confirm that fresh manufactured Zauri are available.

This is great news for Zaurus users; however, the driver is still very buggy. Hopefully I'll be able to write to an sd card in the sd slot by the next release?
