Open Documentation: Absolutely or Else

Contributed by deanna on from the get-in-your-car-and-drive dept.

Apologies for the late notice. Theo de Raadt is giving a talk titled "Open Documentation, Absolutely or Else" at the Calgary Unix Users' Group tonight at 5:30 MST:

Many companies still refuse to provide operating systems with documentation for their products. They give various reasons. Theo will dig through the truth and baloney, and explain the consequences, while providing a lot of hilarious material about the process. Vancouver, Seattle, Edmonton people can probably make it if they leave right now!

Yeah...Open documentation is pretty nice^W^Wimportant when you inherit hardware, not just when you buy conscientiously. Also important when you buy nice things without being as conscientious as you should/could be.

This is incorrect; if there is no open documentation, then there
won't be any well supported hardware to conscientiously purchase!

I hope that Theo will post some of his notes at least for all of us that are unable to attend due to distance. Having something like that available that can be used in local users groups, or even discussions with the boss on why not to buy certian hardware would be alot easier if I could point at something on the net for him to read and keep busy while I buy the correct hardware, and It might also inform him enough to start buying from only open venders. Let alone the thoughts of passing as information to as many people as possiable woul dbe much easier if we don't have to haul them all up to Canada to hear Theo speak at events like this.
