3.7 artwork sneak peek and pre-orders

Contributed by dhartmei on from the somewhere-over-the-rainbow dept.

New artwork of the upcoming 3.7 release made it into CVS, see the Wizard of OS theme on the 3.7 cover and read what's new (page is still being updated). Pre-order is available now on the international and european order pages. Rumour has it that there will be a new t-shirt (with an updated design of an old classic), too. Check back on the order pages later for details.

Just to confirm, the 3.7 preorders for CDs, Tshirts and posters are now up both for the international and European ordering site. Yes it was announced a day early and yes the website was moved so some people were affected by the DNS propagation, but I'm sure you'll all survive that ;-)

woohoo; just ordered a cd set and one of those nice t-shirts too.

Now let's hope I'm not too far back in the queue (the orders are shipped FIFO, right?)... ;-)

Yes, orders are shipped FIFO, with notable exceptions:

          1. Postoffice might be closed where UPS orders get out earlier in morning and later at night (they are open up to 21h, postoffice closes at 16h30)
          2. Sometimes certain items are delaying orders, like a missing Tshirt that is scheduled to come back in stock

Oh yeah, ending up in the wrong stack is unfortunat but in the stress in getting out the door mistakes do happen.

This year, it's my intention to start shipping out > 1 kg stuff with UPS, it depends on in which zone you live (due to the tarif)

Wim (speaking for .eu of course)

Did you send your dmesg? Did you search the mailing list archives? If they don't know about a bug, don't expect them to fix it. Also, if you are using an identical config across those systems, that may be your problem. Make sure you have Option "Device" "/dev/wsmouse" and Option "Protocol" "wsmouse" in your config.

That is sweet looking. Damned shame about the old daemon 3d model being lost to the winds of time. I'd liked to see a new shirt of it, maybe of the whole daemon.

Even without the model it would be nice to have an updated version of the old wireframe daemon head though, I think a red one on a white shirt would be sweet.

Unfortunatly the Daemon is no longer the mascot, he served wel for many years but now Puffy rules.

That means there will be no reprints of Tshirts or hooded sweaters with the daemon head, sorry. All the remaining stock will be sold off (don't ask, all the hooded sweaters are long gone).

Hmm now that they've become limited, we should crank up those prices ;-)

We need to create a general OpenBSD Feature Poster for Trade shows and Professor's Doors.

Basically need to show Theo's talk on OpenBSD Hardening features. Best if kept in the OpenBSD theme of Blowfish if possible. The poster should be usable for multiple releases of the operating system.

Thanks, that wasn't at all helpful. There are probably a hundred talks listed on that page and none of the descriptions mentions the words "harden" or "hardening." I didn't feel like reading all of them to find the right talk, so I asked for a link. So, don't be a jerk, huh?

There is no 'hardening' talk anyway; You might be thinking about the talk on 'exploit
mitigation techniques' implemented in the kernel. So instead of being immature and
calling me names, why didn't you just spend 5 mins and look at the talks that had slides.

Anyway, Theo sent me the link I posted when I asked him about the slides. I guess he's a jerk too, so I'm in good company ;)

There is no 'hardening' talk anyway

I figured that out before I posted my original message asking for a link. I know enough to do at least a little searching before asking a question in an OpenBSD forum.

You might be thinking about the talk on 'exploit mitigation techniques' implemented in the kernel

Pardon me for not knowing that when the original poster said "hardening," he really meant "exploit mitigation techniques." Clearly, I should have know that.

So instead of being immature and calling me names, why didn't you just spend 5 mins and look at the talks that had slides.

There are roughly 150 links from events.html. It'll take way more than five minutes to check if any of them concerns some type of hardening. And, even if I found something that looked right, maybe it wasn't what the original poster was referring too. So please don't waste my time posting a link that doesn't help me.

Anyway, Theo sent me the link I posted when I asked him about the slides. I guess he's a jerk too, so I'm in good company ;)

See? You thought I was calling you names, but, really, it was a compliment.

Numerous folks (now myself, included) have been having a lot of trouble with the official openbsd store. I never got my t-shirt + cd order of 3.6, and eventually tried to cancel my order. I'm not sure if that ever went through or not, as I never received a reply to my e-mail requests.

I did eventually find a copy of the CD set at J&R, but it makes me sad that I had to go through that. OpenBSD is largely sustained from sales of these t-shirts + cds and the donations that go with them, it'd be really nice if the store worked better than it does.

I really like openbsd, I like buying their cds, I like the stickers, but yeesh... Last time it was brought up on misc@ that I can remember, folks were lambasted for not buying a t-shirt with their cd set, when they reporting having their cd cases smashed and in some cases, the cds scratched. We can get the cds from some othe stores (after a while?) but the t-shirts and others seem hard to get.

Odd. I have ordered copies since 3.2 and have never had a problem. I have also ordered shirts, posters, etc. Yes it does take a while to get the order though sometimes I get the cds before the official release date. I think in all cases I've preordered as early as possible.

It is pretty odd, actually. I've been buying t-shirts/cds on and off since 2.7, and it's in the last two years that the store has started going downhill. Enough people have publicly complained to have me worried.

I don't really care about sckeptics myself; I just want to make sure my money gets to the team and I get a nice cd set to sit on my shelf. The day the release tags stable I'm PXE booting the release, anyway. My last order never had my credit card charged after five months on order. If I can't give them money, I can't show my appreciation in the way I wanted to :( If I had time to code for OBSD, I would, but I don't, so I donate.

I only say anything out of concern because of the number of folks reporting the issue, and that I was finally bit by it myself. I'll give it one last chance and preorder 3.7 though. With that fancypants new t-shirt :)

Let's see... I have, right behind my desk on the book shelf, the CDs for OpenBSD 2.6, 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5. The CD box of 3.6 is on my desk.

Out of all of these releases, only the CD box of 3.0 was cracked when it arrived (the CDs themselves were OK). And the only release that was late was, if I remember well, OpenBSD 3.4. And that was due to a problem with the company that made the CDs, and not with the OpenBSD shop.

I have also ordered several T-Shirts and Polo Shirts. All of them were received with the CDs.

So, I'd rather order from the OpenBSD shop (either the Canadian or the European one) than from most Linux distributors. YMMV.

That's good to know. I would hope most people have a good experience with them; I just hope you don't absolutely have to order immediately during a preorder to get the cds? Have you gotten any of them after the release date? For what it's worth, I preordered my 3.6 cds, but got the preorder in only a couple weeks before release.

Ahh, I apologize for the confusion; I mean I had only gotten the preorder *made* a few weeks before release, instead of a full month and a half. My preorder was sometime in october, and I finally gave up on waiting and started asking about the order in late feb/early march. I figured four months was enough time by that point...

I don't mean that I gave up on the order before the actual release date. I wouldn't be nearly that stupid. I waited several months.

                  2. By Dormando (69.10.75.186) on

oh, and to further clarify. My 3.6 CD set + tshirt never arrived. The card was never charged... I e-mailed my receipt details to the store a few times, but never heard back.

After I asked for the order to be officially cancelled, I trolled around the NYC J&R store until an employee dug up a 3.6 cd set from the back room for me (for my girlfriend, actually. she had much better luck getting their attention).

I've purchased copies of OpenBSD since 2.7, and _every_single_one_ that I've preordered has arrived early and intact. I think (since 2.7) I've ordered two sets after release, and they shipped promptly as well. I'm positive problems have happened with shipping and ordering, etc. But, that's the fact of life when you order online. I've received far worse service from Dell, HP, and IBM. And the product I receive from them is typically lower in quality. :) I very much appreciate the OpenBSD team's work, and until I re-learn C, I probably can't show that appreciation well enough. Heh.

              2. By thewallguy (206.221.246.130) on

The CDs in my 3.4 and 3.6 boxes were loose in the package when they arrived. The little nibs that hold them in place had broken. No dammage to the CDs, but the bits of plastic could have scratched them. Sad part is that I can't keep my CDs in the original jewel case. How about shipping the CDs in paper sleeves and taping those to the jewel case?

        2. By Anthony Roberts (68.145.103.21) on

If I got one of the smashed ones I'd be annoyed, if it came late I'd be annoyed. Better to just donate and burn a CD. Saves them the printing and shipping costs anyway. I don't mind not being the first kid on the block to get the new version.

Now if I could buy downloadable .iso's online... Well, then we'd be talking.

(like I said at some point in this thread) As soon as a release is out, I'm likely PXE netbooting (hooray for the addition of that!) the release in the same day. I like the cds and t-shirts because I like branding myself out in public (had a few people recognize it here in NYC), and because I'm of the blood type who likes tangible objects at times. My bookshelves full of knicknacks and various nerd objects is quite nice, I think. Sometimes I think about giving in a patch or six, and sometimes I lobby at work for donation money to the hackathon. It doesn't always come to fruit, but I can always try to buy a cd set every six months regardless.

    2. By pedro (200.165.250.38) on

Not sure if it's due to them, to the shipping companies involved, customs, or whatever, the fact is that I've never received two t-shirts and a CD I ordered in 19/05/2004, and that was very disappointing.

I was able to get in touch with them, after a few tries, and in three different occasions I was told that my package had been shipped, that no, it hadn't really been shipped, and finally, that yes, it had been shipped, but on a different date.

I do trust them, and I don't really want to blame them for absolutely anything, I'm sure they did their best. But that there's something fishy going on in the process of getting the packages delivered, oh well, there is...

I am still waiting for my 3.6 t-shirt that I ordered on 2/24!
I won't be ordering anything again from OpenBSD sadly.
When I queryed the order I did get a response, to be fair, but
it was simply to say that my order had shipped. I
replied back asking for some details so that I could track
it but never got a reply to my second e-mail.
I also chose to pay extra shipping for the "express" shipping
    option.

I have a good idea for a theme for the next release, horror; make the CD cover just like Resident Evil. 3.1 was close to that, but more comical then what I was thinking; though I suppose it's really Ty and Theo that come up with these things. The only thing that would be better would be You Bet Your Life, Puff with the Groucho look would be pretty cool.

DSL gave up the ghost. It's been moved to another host, if
your DNS has the update you should see it again now. Sorry for
      the inconvienience.

OpenBSD has the best artwork of all the BSDs. I'm excited for this release, but I'm also tempted to buy one of the new t-shirts. :-)

Indeed it does. And speaking of which, who is responsible for making those kick-ass and hilarious OpenBSD soundtracks?

DSL gave up the ghost, Got woken up by my mommy when she couldn't
get mail. Now moved the site. You should see it as your DNS
    for openbsd.org gets current.

    Sorry for the inconvenience

Both order sites are still down on my end at 5.50PM CEST... I am trying to preorder for some hours now :)
I hope they are down due to the amount of orders. That would make Theo happy.. :)

Like Bob is saying, you'll have to wait for the DNS caches to be refreshed. This can take a while, but typically less than a day.

Like I said, your DNS probably doesn't have the change for
        https.openbsd.org yet.

If you truly can't wait, it's at 68.148.128.241
