OpenBSD 3.0 Available for pre-order

So you all know... we've just activated 3.0 pre-orders...

The price has gone up to $40 US as we previously discussed, since this
release contains 3 CDs (in the same size package! Can you imagine how
much effort it took to find such a package?!?!), and because the price
remained fixed at $30 USD for the previous 9 CD releases.

Having 3 CDs also lets us do something else we've wanted to do: 6
architectures can boot and install directly from the 3 CDs provided:
i386, alpha, macppc, hp300, sparc, and sparc64.

AUDIO!?!?! audio is good. (But the 2.9 cd has a secret easter egg audio track. To find it, just:
    "dd if=/dev/cd0a of=/audio; cat audio > /dev/audio" ;-)

Can I play the audio from the 2.9 CD on a windows 2000?

      Comments
      1. By ThomasJ () on

No, you can't because eventhough the audio track is there IPF filters out the audio stream.
Now IPF is out of OpenBSD it is actually possible to hear it, but the sound is still very fishy.

sarcasm my good friend, sarcasm. *grin* (My audio card isn't supported until 3.0 (SBLive!) so I can't even try that. I'm sure its the same as putting the disk in a audio-only player, and pressing play...lots of static...=)

Just out of interest has the european "distribution problem" been sorted yet. I took a trip to my local bookshop (pcbooks.co.uk) and they told me that they cant get supplies of OpenBSD at the moment because the disty went bust or something.

Can anyone confirm this or tell me somewhere nice in the UK I can go buy the CDs? I'm not downloading the bloody binaries over my 56k - that classifies as painful :P

I live in the UK too. I've always ordered my CDs direct via the website. The Computer Shop rule ! They even sent me a hand written Xmas card once !

The CD's arrive quickly, and the price is fair as far as I'm concerned. I'm certainly prepared to pay $40 pric for a product I love like OpenBSD. :)

The problem with being so happy with OpenBSD is that it hurt all the more when I paid to upgrade to Win98 just so I could use USB. :(

I know that there are a couple of European sources of OpenBSD, but to be honest I've been so happy with the Canadian store that I just haven't looked elsewhere... This is what is known as customer loyalty. I wish more companies valued it. :)

      Cheers,
      Rupert

Bah, if you want it - download an ISO. I've got every release from 4.0 (and the rc's) on CD, all downloaded with my 56k modem.

        There, really, on large lacks:
        Theo runs OpenBSD like lemurs,
        the rip-off of looser lemmings.
        the run (oh-oh) level lack
        takes rolling over long leaps.

I mean come on. He should be happy to be our servant. Putting in hours apon hours of time into OBSD over the years is payment enough. In fact I propose that Theo give OBSD to any one who asks. Oh what he does do that. If your a cheap bastard all you have to do is download the ftp tree for your arch.

Whiners sux. Cheap fuks sux even more.

I've bought most every release (since 2.5), and I don't even use OSBD on my servers (SMP boxes that do virtual hosting, email, etc). I do have a fresh OBSD 2.9 install running on my laptop though.

I agree 100%. OpenBSD needs as much financial support as they can get to develop more and better. Only makes sense! I personally buy all my CD's (mainly for the stickers) and usually ftp install anyways. ftp install is sweet. But, I like to support a good cause. If I were a Luser (Linux User) I would NEVER buy a redhat CD. Not only cause it sux ass, but why support a crappy, monoplozing money hungry company that's just following in the foot steps of M$. Same with IBM.

          1. By Rupert Pigott () on

            Redhat are like M$.
            M$ are NOTHING like IBM.

For a start I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I see a chunk of IBM hardware. By contrast when I see M$ software I get stomach cramps and panic attacks.

As far as monopolies go, IBM ain't exactly a monopoly... Every major line of hardware they have done has been licensed or cloned (from PCs to Mainframes).

System/360 -> Cloned by Amdahl (and others)
IBM PC -> Cloned by Compaq (and others)
PPC -> Co-developed and Licensed by Apple & Moto (and others)

The PC is pretty unforgiveable, but IBM have done a lot of good things too. Most importantly they do a ton of original research, which is what moves the industry onwards. :)

So even though they have done evil deeds, probably are continuing to do evil deeds, IBM isn't all bad. :)

            Cheers,
            Rupert

I have only bought the 2.9 and 3.0 release so far. I downloaded 2.8 to see if I liked it, and lo-and-behold, I did. By the time I had played with it enough to justify my spending money on it (I have paid for just one piece of software in about 5 years, that includes OS's) 2.9 had just came out, so I bought that. I'll keep buying the cd's, and when my fiance lets go of the checkbook, I'll get some tee-shirts and posters and such. (Pure donations as well.)

Theo has done such a good job with OpenBSD. My only compiants are that I don't know Unix or programming well. (I know I don't need to know them, but I want to.)

    3. By Anonymous Coward () on

Code talks, covers are an extra. In fact I downloaded the latest snapshot (which is almost identical to the 3.0) and put it on 4 Dell 350 rack mount servers. Slam Wham, on in a flash. I didn't even get to see the cover whiz by! So just like the last several releases, we are going to order a bunch of CDs. Why, because we like the covers? ;) It is because the code TALKS, and it speaks with such eloquence that I sleep well at night. When my job is on the line, I want something I can trust, and I trust Theo and crew, and I want them to keep doing what they do best.

Let the covers do their part, I think they are way more interesting than the other distributions around. But in the end, covers don't add or subtract to the code.

thank you very much friscoon. as can plainly be seen, left handed emoticons are propietary, non-standard, and often introduce complexity and confusion. the introduction of complexity and irregularity into a system (emoticon communication in this case) has long been recognized as a potential source for vulnerability or susceptibility to attack. i would expect nothing less from the openbsd community than the use of right-handed-only emoticons. there was a long thread about this on -misc awhile ago, and i believe theo laid it out quite clearly (as always) that the use of left-handed emoticons was for the mentally challenged users who could not grasp the simple concept of accepting standards. i'll look for his email (i'm on a slow connection now so i can't go sorting through -misc archives, sorry). thanks for your understanding guys :] and thanks to all the openbsd developers for such a great right-handed system!

After a read through the pf HOWTO, at
http://www.inebriated.demon.nl/pf-howto/, here are the main things I noticed:

-- 'head' and 'group' are gone (pf uses another method of optimization)

-- variables (like in shell scripts)

      -- sets (e.g., block in on { xl0, xl1 } ...)

      There's probably more....
