EuroBSDCon 2015 OpenBSD Presentations Online

Contributed by tbert on from the bork-your-configs-with-swedish-chef dept.

This year's EuroBSDCon in Stockholm, Sweden was a quite successful conference with approximately 250 attendees and a fairly strong showing of OpenBSD developers presenting:

  • Raceless network configuration, Vadim Zhukov (video, slides)
  • Portroach, OpenBSD distfile scanner, Jasper Lievisse Adriaanse (video, slides)
  • softraid(4) boot, Stefan Sperling (video, paper)
  • Cryptography in OpenBSD: Another Overview Ted Unangst (video, slides)
  • Faster and more secure packages in OpenBSD, Marc Espie (video, slides)
  • mandoc: from scratch to the standard BSD documentation toolkit in 6 years, Ingo Schwarze (video, slides)
  • Why OpenBSD matters in the Healthcare Industry, Brandon Mercer (video, slides)
  • OpenBSD sucks, Henning Brauer (video)
  • config – Rethinking kernel build Masao Uebayashi (video)

In addition, Ingo Schwarze gave a half day mandoc tutorial and Peter Hansteen gave a half day PF tutorial (slides available as usual from here).

Stockholm showed itself from its best sunny side on all conference days, and a good time appears to have been had by all. During the closing session, it was revealed that the 2016 EuroBSDCon conference will be held in Belgrade (Beograd), Serbia.

I had a blast at the conference. Very nice weather, lots of friendly people. Janne is a hoot as a host, and it was cool to meet Paul Vixie, and to meet again with a lot of old friends and a few new ones.

Conference organization was pretty much flawless, I'm currently exhausted from seeing so many people in a few days, but it was really really cool.

    Thanks to the organizers.

Sound from the video are only coming out from the left speaker. I'd suggest re-muxing the right to mirror the left, then re-uploading it so it's more pleasant to listen to.

You should probably tell the people who actually created and uploaded the videos that. Do you also go to Taco Bell and tell them your Whopper was improperly prepared?

There are nicer ways of making this point.

No, but I sure to talk to the cashier who presents it to me instead of the cook.

No you don't, because Taco Bell doesn't sell Whoppers, just as Undeadly doesn't produce and publish EuroBSDCon videos. Do you even metaphor, bro?

That's just the unprocessed livestream. Wait for the "final" to be better.

        Fantastic, thanks for the reply!

Less OpenBSD representation in EuroBSDcon 2015 compared to last year's, there must be much more happening in the tree. Hope next year brings OpenBSD talks on all interesting new developments. I was watching live all the time.

Poor (as in penniless) fellows would appreciate uninterrupted live streams (during talk setup, questions and hallways as well) with better video quality (readability) and lower bandwidth requirements (resolution). Obviously this is a University set up and not a conference centre, but a little more test preparation would not have hurt.

A note of criticism, Youtube was glitchy to watch on good broadband (codec choice) compared to self managed streaming last year and some viewers reported blocked countries (waat?). Audio was missing and cut at the beginning of some talks, and all talks audio was badly clipping with distortion. Streams were not announced in advance as links and there was no test signal to prepare for reception, where the browsers failed to deliver anything. People who want pseudo-stereo have options in multiple ways to manage audio channels, so this is not a concern. Everything looked and worked out great from a online viewers distance though.

Other conferences could simply try to stream live too, shame to organize an event and miss this opportunity to attract spectators and interest. EuroBSDcon was great to watch online as always no matter what technical issues there might have been, it was worth every second and the talks are priceless.
